In my practice as an Internet Marketing Consultant in San Antonio Texas, I hear this question a lot: Is Google opposed to Search Engine Optimization (SEO)? The short answer is no, Google is not opposed to Search Engine Optimization. In fact Google spends a great deal of time effort and energy working with Search Engine Optimization Experts. Matt Cutts of Google heads up a team of “Googlers” as Google employees call themselves, whose primary job it to work with Search Engine Optimization Experts and educate them on “best practices” for Search Engine Optimization and Internet Marketing.

Although it can be safely said that Google has no general problem with Search Engine Optimization this does not mean that Google approves of all methods of Search Engine Optimization. Google makes no secret of the fact that their primary goal is to provide a good user experience. This means that when an individual performs a search on Google they want to deliver the most relevant, fresh results possible. Anything that interferes with Google delivering this good user experience will be frowned upon and can easily result in your website being penalized with poor ranking.

Why is it so important for your business to be on the first page of Google Maps?

Everyone by now is familiar with the “Google Maps” or “Google Local” search results that appear when you use Google to search for a local business   for instance  “Plumbers in San Antonio”.   It really doesn’t matter   what type of business you are searching for, these results will usually appear at the top of the first page.   This fact is the primary reason that your business needs to appear in these local search results, they are the first thing that potential customers see when they “Google” your business type.

So why is it so important that your business appear on the first page of “Google Maps” why not the second, third or fourth?  The answer is simple, from an internet marketing standpoint, there is only one page on the internet and that is the first page.  Users rarely look past the first page of results after an intent search, if they don’t see what they are looking for they try a different search term.  If your business  is not  on the first page of results  when a  potential customer is searching the internet, your business is not likely to be found and you aren’t going to land the customer.

“Google Maps” are the new Yellow Pages. Use of the Yellow Pages has been steadily decreasing over the past 5 years as now far more people find businesses on the internet than by using the yellow pages.  Fingers are no longer doing the walking when looking for a business, now they are doing the clicking.  This shift in consumer habits has already led to the demise of many Yellow Page directories. San Antonio had three major directories  last year but now there are only two. Yellow Page Directories  use paper which is expensive and environmentally unfriendly.  Yellow Page advertising revenues are steadily decreasing.   In the not so distant future,  Print on Paper Yellow Page Directories will go the way of the dinosaur.

So  how do you get your  business on  the first page of Google Maps?   The first thing you need to do is create a listing in the Google Maps index.   This listing is free and you can do it yourself but if you don’t do it right you are virtually assured of never ending up on the first page.  There are thousands of   plumbers in most big cities, but only 10 of them will be on the first page of  Google Results for Plumbers. If you are a plumber you want to be one of the lucky 10 on the first page.

If you want to ensure that your business shows up on the first page of Google Maps  your  best bet is to hire a Internet Marketing Consultant.  When you  discuss your business with the Internet  Marketing Consultant makes sure that  the Internet  Marketing  Consultant has experience with  Google Maps Optimization  ask to see examples of clients that  the Internet Marketing  Consultant has successfully moved to the front page of Google Maps.   Not all Internet Marketing Consultant experts have experience optimizing for  “Google Maps” .  So make sure you hire one that has the experience to get the results you want.

You can attempt to figure out Goggles algorithm , the complex mathematical scoring system that Google uses to  determine which businesses will appear first and which businesses will be relegated to the back woods of Google Maps.  You can search for information on Google itself ,  unfortunately   you will find more misinformation than good information.   There are some things that you just should not try to do yourself, like surgery, cutting your own hair and search engine optimization.   Some things are just better left  to  professionals.

If your business has a nice website but never appears on the first page of Google when potential customers come calling (or clicking)  then it is like you bought a nice big beautiful bill board for your business and then placed it in the Alaskan Wilderness.  No one is going to see it and Moose just don’t buy that many these days.  They can’t get a MasterCard.
